The problem of borrowings
Today, we are increasingly trying to use “fashionable” borrowings in languages. This makes it easier and easier for us to communicate with people, but at the same time we forget parts of our mother tongue every time. For example, instead of "ветровка" we use "windproof ", and so the borrowings are becoming more and more common...
The biggest problem here, in my opinion, is that the originality of the mother tongue is lost. Of course, we simplify our lives, because everyone knows English words and the process of unification helps when communicating with people from other countries, but at the same time we harm our own language. One day, with so many borrowings , the language might cease to exist because all of its vocabulary will be replaced by its international analogue.
Apart from the language, culture will suffer, because the language is a huge layer of this very culture which also reflects the national character which disappears along with the language...
Actually, I'm in two minds about this.
ReplyDeleteI agree up to a point that using so many borrowings instead of our own words doesn't let the language develop. We don't create new words and we also replace the old ones. It definitely influences our culture and the way we use our language.
On the other hand, borrowings simplify our lives and that's a normal process during the interaction between people. However, I believe it is still impossible to change all the words into international analogue so the language won't exist anymore. But we will see, probably such a situation can also happen.
